A 3-night exclusive gastronomic experience
at UNESCO World Heritage site

Halekulani Okinawa has partnered with ONESTORY, the organizer of one of Japan’s most influential culinary events 'DINING OUT,' to host an exclusive gastronomic journey on the main island of Okinawa on February 10, 11 and 12, 2024. The exquisite dining experience will take place in a UNESCO World Heritage Sie in collaboration with a world-renowned chef.

DINING OUT RYUKYU-SHURI

The stage for 'DINING OUT RYUKYU-SHURI' will be the world heritage site 'Shuri Castle' located in Naha City, Okinawa. This marks the third time the event has taken place in Okinawa, and it will be set against the backdrop of 'Shuri Castle,' a UNESCO World Heritage site and the symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom that lasted for approximately 450 years. The castle is currently undergoing restoration, making it an exclusive location for a unique dining event.

Mr. Tomoya Kawada, from Sazenka in Tokyo, is the featured chef of DINING OUT RYUKYU-SHURI. His restaurant has been ranked No.12 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list and is the only Chinese restaurant with three Michelin stars outside the Chinese speaking world.
Chef Kawada will create an unparalleled dining experience, inspired by traditional rituals and royal cuisine offered by the King of the Ryukyu Kingdom for “Sapposhi,” the Chinese envoys sent by the emperor at the coronation ceremony for the king. Guests will also experience a historical reenactment of the Ryukyu Kingdom. This will be complemented by Chef Kawada’s culinary expertise and the art of refined hospitality, which historically played an important role in strengthening a diplomatic tie with China at the Zuisenmon Gate of Shuri Castle where there are “the Seven Investiture Tablets of Sapposhi,” the seven stone monuments of poems and quotes praising the purity of “Ryuhi” spring water near the gate.

Chef Tomoya Kawada
Sazenka (Minami-Azabu, Tokyo)

Hailing from Tochigi Prefecture, Tomoya Kawada developed a fondness for Sichuan cuisine from a young age, including dishes like dandan noodles, mapo tofu, and bang bang chicken. His determination to become a chef was evident as he even wrote it in his kindergarten graduation album. In 2000, he began his culinary journey as a part-time employee at "Azabu Choukou" and officially joined the team in 2002. He honed his skills over a decade at the same establishment. Subsequently, he joined Japanese restaurant "Ryugin," focusing on utilizing Japanese ingredients. He also played a role in launching "Ryugin” in Taiwan (Shouyun Ryugin). After returning to Japan, he went through a preparation period and, in February 2017, opened "Sazenka."
